Description

"Thirteen Ways To Look At Birds" is a unique and captivating album that brings together the talents of renowned Australian singer-songwriter Paul Kelly, composer James Ledger, vocalist Alice Keath, and the Seraphim Trio. Released in 2019, this collaborative project explores the beauty and diversity of birds through a collection of thirteen songs, each inspired by a different bird species.

The album opens with the hauntingly beautiful track "Magpie," which sets the tone for the rest of the album. Kelly's distinctive voice, accompanied by the delicate piano and strings of the Seraphim Trio, creates a mesmerizing atmosphere that draws the listener in. The lyrics, inspired by the magpie's melodious song, evoke a sense of longing and reflection.

Throughout the album, each song showcases the unique characteristics and behaviors of various bird species. From the playful and rhythmic "Butcherbird" to the melancholic and introspective "Night Parrot," the compositions by James Ledger perfectly capture the essence of each bird. Ledger's arrangements skillfully blend classical and contemporary elements, creating a rich and diverse musical landscape.

Alice Keath's ethereal vocals add another layer of depth and emotion to the songs. Her voice effortlessly soars above the instrumentation, bringing the lyrics to life and immersing the listener in the world of birds. Keath's versatility shines through as she adapts her singing style to suit the different moods and themes of each track.

The Seraphim Trio, consisting of pianist Anna Goldsworthy, violinist Helen Ayres, and cellist Timothy Nankervis, provides a solid foundation for the album. Their precise and sensitive playing enhances the emotional impact of the songs, creating a seamless blend of classical and contemporary music. The trio's chemistry and musicality are evident throughout the album, adding a sense of cohesion to the diverse range of compositions.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Dancing Brolga," a lively and energetic piece that captures the grace and elegance of the bird it is inspired by. The interplay between Kelly's vocals, Keath's harmonies, and the vibrant instrumentation creates a sense of joy and celebration. This track, along with others like "Pelican" and "Black Swan," showcases the versatility and creativity of the artists involved.

"Thirteen Ways To Look At Birds" is not just a collection of songs; it is a celebration of nature and a reflection on the human experience. The lyrics, written by Paul Kelly, delve into themes of love, loss, and the interconnectedness of all living beings. The album encourages listeners to appreciate the beauty of the natural world and to find inspiration in the smallest of creatures.

In terms of production, the album is polished and well-balanced. The instrumentation is clear and the vocals are given room to shine. The mix allows the listener to fully immerse themselves in the music, capturing the nuances and subtleties of each performance.

Overall, "Thirteen Ways To Look At Birds" is a remarkable collaboration that showcases the talents of Paul Kelly, James Ledger, Alice Keath, and the Seraphim Trio. The album successfully combines elements of folk, classical, and contemporary music to create a unique and captivating listening experience. Whether you are a fan of Paul Kelly's storytelling, appreciate classical compositions, or simply enjoy music that transports you to another world, this album is a must-listen. "Thirteen Ways To Look At Birds" is a testament to the power of collaboration and the beauty of the natural world.
