Description

Australian singer-songwriter Paul Kelly has been a prominent figure in the music industry for several decades, known for his heartfelt lyrics and captivating storytelling. His album "Ways & Means" is a testament to his talent and showcases his ability to create music that resonates with listeners on a deep level.

Released in 2004, "Ways & Means" is a collection of 12 tracks that explore a range of themes, from love and loss to social commentary. The album opens with the energetic and catchy "Beautiful Feeling," setting the tone for what's to come. Kelly's distinctive voice immediately draws you in, and his lyrics paint vivid pictures that transport you into his world.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "God Told Me To," a hauntingly beautiful song that delves into the complexities of faith and spirituality. Kelly's introspective lyrics and delicate guitar work create a mesmerizing atmosphere, leaving a lasting impression on the listener. Another notable track is "Ways & Means," a soulful ballad that showcases Kelly's ability to convey raw emotions through his music. The song's introspective lyrics and heartfelt delivery make it a standout moment on the album.

Throughout "Ways & Means," Kelly effortlessly transitions between different musical styles, showcasing his versatility as an artist. From the bluesy rock of "I'll Forgive But I Won't Forget" to the folk-inspired "Just About to Break," each track offers a unique sonic experience. Kelly's ability to seamlessly blend genres is a testament to his musical prowess and adds depth to the album as a whole.

Lyrically, "Ways & Means" is a masterclass in storytelling. Kelly's ability to craft narratives that are both relatable and thought-provoking is evident throughout the album. Whether he's exploring the complexities of relationships in "You're 39, You're Beautiful, and You're Mine" or shedding light on social issues in "Our Sunshine," Kelly's lyrics are poignant and evocative. His storytelling skills shine through, making each song a captivating journey.

In terms of production, "Ways & Means" is polished and well-executed. The instrumentation is rich and varied, with each instrument serving a purpose in enhancing the overall sound. The album strikes a perfect balance between simplicity and complexity, allowing the lyrics and melodies to take center stage while still providing a lush musical backdrop.

While "Ways & Means" is undoubtedly a strong album, it may not be as well-known as some of Kelly's earlier works. This could be attributed to the fact that it was released during a time when the music industry was undergoing significant changes, making it harder for artists to gain widespread recognition. However, for fans of Paul Kelly, "Ways & Means" is a hidden gem that deserves to be discovered and appreciated.

In conclusion, "Ways & Means" is a testament to Paul Kelly's talent as a singer-songwriter. With its heartfelt lyrics, captivating storytelling, and diverse musical styles, the album showcases Kelly's ability to create music that resonates with listeners on a deep level. While it may not have received the recognition it deserves, "Ways & Means" is a must-listen for fans of Kelly's work and anyone who appreciates thoughtful and well-crafted music.
