Description
The brushed snare pickup before the first chorus of Revelator tells you where Matthew Houck is heading: slow burn, hard truths. Phosphorescent’s Revelator, his first full-length since 2018, leans into the tender, wide-open Americana he does better than most. The title track bears that weathered croon and a patient pedal steel swell; then Impossible House tugs a little harder, its chorus blooming like a late resolve.
Cut in his own studio with familiar players, you can feel the air around the instruments. This Black Ice Vinyl pressing gives the songs more room to breathe; low end sits deeper and imaging snaps into focus. If you’d rather order online, you can buy Phosphorescent records online with us.
Stick this on the shelf next to the Magnolia Electric Co. era and it makes perfect sense, but Houck’s devotional streak is uniquely his. Small arrangements count: the organ thread under Revelator’s coda, the way the guitars lean in and out of time without fuss.
It is a quiet record that rewards volume, not for bombast but for detail, and it suits a late kitchen clean or a long after-dark drive. The package looks sharp too, that ice-black variant suiting the dusky mood.
Available online now or in our Melbourne shop, an easy pick for any Phosphorescent fan.
