Heart's Ease, the latest album by English folk singer Shirley Collins, is a remarkable testament to her enduring talent and the timeless beauty of traditional folk music. Released in 2020, this album marks Collins' return to the music scene after a hiatus of nearly four decades, and it is a true delight for both long-time fans and newcomers alike.
At the age of 84, Collins' voice remains as captivating and evocative as ever. Her delicate yet powerful vocals effortlessly transport listeners to a bygone era, where stories were told through song and emotions were conveyed with every note. Heart's Ease showcases Collins' ability to breathe life into traditional folk songs, infusing them with her own unique interpretation and heartfelt delivery.
The album opens with the hauntingly beautiful track "The Merry Golden Tree," a traditional ballad that sets the tone for the rest of the record. Collins' voice, accompanied by delicate acoustic instrumentation, creates an ethereal atmosphere that draws listeners in from the very first note. Throughout the album, her voice is complemented by a range of instruments, including guitar, banjo, fiddle, and accordion, all played by a talented group of musicians who perfectly capture the essence of the folk tradition.
One of the standout tracks on Heart's Ease is "Wondrous Love," a song that showcases Collins' ability to convey deep emotions through her voice. The stripped-down arrangement allows her vocals to take center stage, and the result is a truly moving performance that resonates with the listener. Another highlight is "Locked In Ice," a hauntingly beautiful song that tells the story of a doomed Arctic expedition. Collins' voice, combined with the atmospheric instrumentation, creates a sense of desolation and longing that is both captivating and poignant.
Throughout the album, Collins explores a variety of themes, from love and loss to the beauty of the natural world. Her song choices are diverse, ranging from traditional ballads to lesser-known gems from the folk canon. Each track is carefully selected and arranged, showcasing Collins' deep knowledge and appreciation for the genre. Her ability to breathe new life into these songs is a testament to her skill as an interpreter and her unwavering dedication to preserving and celebrating traditional folk music.
Heart's Ease is not only a testament to Collins' talent as a singer but also to her resilience and determination. After a long absence from the music scene due to health issues, she has returned with an album that is a true gift to folk music enthusiasts. Her passion for the genre shines through in every note, and her ability to connect with the listener is truly remarkable.
In conclusion, Shirley Collins' Heart's Ease is a stunning album that showcases her timeless talent and unwavering dedication to traditional folk music.
