Released on September 29, 2023, this album marks a significant step forward for King and his ensemble, blending intricate musicianship with heartfelt storytelling that resonates deeply with listeners.
From the opening track, "Blood on the Rose," the listener is immediately drawn into a world where King’s raspy, soulful voice takes center stage. The song is a powerful declaration, setting the tone for the album with its rich instrumentation and emotional depth. The production, helmed by the renowned producer Dave Cobb, captures the raw energy of the band while allowing each member’s contributions to shine. Cobb, known for his work with artists like Chris Stapleton and Brandi Carlile, brings a polished yet organic sound that feels both contemporary and timeless.
One of the standout tracks, "Hard Times," showcases King’s ability to weave personal narratives with universal themes. The lyrics reflect struggles and resilience, a common thread throughout the album. The instrumentation here is particularly noteworthy, with a blend of electric guitar riffs and soulful organ lines that create a lush soundscape. The interplay between King’s guitar and the band’s rhythm section is electric, highlighting their tight-knit chemistry developed over years of touring and performing together.
"Soul Insight" also features a number of guest musicians, including the legendary keyboardist Reese Wynans, who adds a layer of depth to several tracks. His contributions are especially felt in the blues-infused "Ain’t No Way," where his piano work complements King’s emotive vocals beautifully. This collaboration not only enhances the album’s sound but also pays homage to the rich musical heritage that influences King’s work.
The album’s title track, "Soul Insight," is a reflective piece that delves into themes of self-discovery and introspection. It’s a slower, more contemplative song that allows King’s vocal prowess to shine. The lyrics are poignant, and the arrangement builds gradually, culminating in a powerful climax that leaves a lasting impression. Critics have praised this track for its lyrical depth and emotional resonance, noting it as a highlight of the album.
Another fan favorite is "The Way I See You," a love song that combines elements of rock and soul, showcasing King’s versatility as a songwriter. The catchy chorus and infectious groove make it a standout, and it’s easy to imagine this track becoming a staple in their live performances. The band’s ability to blend genres seamlessly is one of the album’s greatest strengths, appealing to a wide range of musical tastes.
The critical reception of "Soul Insight" has been overwhelmingly positive, with many publications lauding King’s growth as an artist.
