Description

Caroline Shaw steps to the mic across Let The Soil Play Its Simple Part with So Percussion, folding bright songcraft into their tactile chamber grooves. To the Sky glints with vibraphone shimmer and soft handclaps, while Other Song floats a patient vocal line over tuned drums that feel like a heartbeat. It’s modern art-pop sung close to the ear, but built from wood, metal and skin.

Spun on this clear pressing, the space opens up and the imaging snaps into place, so you catch the breath at the end of phrases and the ring of sticks on rims. Side B blooms beautifully in a small room; perfect for a quiet Melbourne evening when you want detail without fuss.

File it near Meredith Monk, though Shaw’s melodies are more song-forward and So Percussion keep everything warm and humane. Lyrics trace nature, devotion and time, never fussy, always direct.

Fans of contemporary classical that isn’t afraid of a chorus will find a lot to live with here, and this edition looks tidy on the shelf too. A thoughtful collaboration, smartly recorded, that rewards close listening as much as background play.
