Description
Aphex Twin - Syro 3xLP Vinyl Record
Syro marks the sixth studio album release by Richard D. James under his main pseudonym Aphex Twin.
The 3xLP album has been 13 years in the making since Aphex Twins previous release since Drukqs in 2001. The long break between recordings has allowed for album to be recorded on wide a wide range of equipment set-ups over several years and incorporate a variety of styles such as techno, synth-funk and acid house. The lead single 'Minipops 67' preceded the album.
Staff Review:
Upon the release of "Syro," I was not familiar with Aphex Twin (aka Richard D James), however, I noticed the album everywhere, in-stores, online and even at a mates place. My curiosity got the better of me and I tuned in. Right from the huge bassline and stylistic percussion of the opening track "minipops 67," I was hooked. Aphex Twin had my attention.
Years on and many, many plays later, "Syro" stands to me as one of the finest works in RDJ's massive discography. The album is comprehensive and has everything I love about Aphex Twin: out of this world percussion, fat, full, acidic and plucky synth bass lines, beautiful melodies, unique use of vocal samples and even a superb piano piece.
Listening to an Aphex Twin album for the first time, you never quite know what you're going to get, his music is often labeled "IDM†(Intellectual Dance Music), however, that doesn't give a great indication. Each piece falls into its own style within the electronic genre and songs from "Syro" range across breakbeat, drum n bass, techno, house and even ambient.
"Syro" feels new. The album is incredibly well mixed and produced, each sound sits exactly where it should, the songs are incredibly melodic and far more welcoming than some past works. For those familiar think "Selected Ambient Works 85-92."
Overall, "Syro" follows more conventional music styles than a lot of Aphex Twin's works. Though, not at any point pop, it doesn't include any overwhelming bursts of intense noise or terrifying vocal samples. Don't get me wrong though, this release still has all the Aphex Twin charm, it just feels like he's moving into a more accessible direction.
