Description
Charli XCX's "Pop 2," released on December 15, 2017, is a mixtape that has been widely celebrated for its innovative approach to pop music. The project is a collaboration with producer A.G. Cook, the founder of the PC Music label, and features a host of guest artists, including Carly Rae Jepsen, Tove Lo, and Kim Petras, among others. "Pop 2" is often credited with pushing the boundaries of pop music, blending hyper-pop elements with experimental sounds to create a futuristic and genre-defying work.
The mixtape opens with "Backseat," featuring Carly Rae Jepsen, which sets the tone for the rest of the project with its lush production and introspective lyrics. The track is a standout, showcasing Charli's ability to blend emotional depth with catchy hooks. Another highlight is "Unlock It," featuring Kim Petras and Jay Park, which has become a fan favorite for its infectious energy and playful lyrics. The song exemplifies the mixtape's ability to merge mainstream pop sensibilities with avant-garde production.
"Pop 2" received critical acclaim upon its release, with many reviewers praising its bold and forward-thinking approach to pop music. Critics highlighted Charli XCX's willingness to experiment and take risks, resulting in a project that feels both cohesive and groundbreaking. The mixtape was seen as a significant departure from Charli's earlier work, marking a new phase in her career where she embraced a more experimental and collaborative approach.
The cultural significance of "Pop 2" lies in its influence on the pop music landscape. It helped to popularize the hyper-pop genre, characterized by its maximalist production and blending of various musical styles. The mixtape's impact can be seen in the work of other artists who have since adopted similar experimental approaches to pop music. Charli XCX's willingness to collaborate with a diverse range of artists also highlights the importance of collaboration in pushing the boundaries of music.

Cook and other producers to create a cohesive sound that still allowed for individual expression from each featured artist. This collaborative spirit is evident in tracks like "Femmebot," featuring Dorian Electra and Mykki Blanco, which combines elements of pop, electronic, and hip-hop to create a unique and dynamic sound.
Despite its critical acclaim, "Pop 2" did not receive any major awards, but its influence on the music industry is undeniable. The mixtape has been cited as an inspiration by many artists and producers, and its impact can be seen in the rise of hyper-pop as a recognized genre. Charli XCX's willingness to push the boundaries of pop music has solidified her status as a trailblazer in the industry.
In conclusion, "Pop 2" is a landmark release in Charli XCX's discography and in the broader pop music landscape.
