Description

"We're New Here" is a collaborative remix album by Gil Scott-Heron and Jamie xx, released on February 21, 2011. This project is a reimagining of Scott-Heron's 2010 album "I'm New Here," which marked his first studio release in 16 years. The collaboration between the legendary spoken word poet and musician Gil Scott-Heron and the young, innovative producer Jamie xx, known for his work with The xx, results in a fascinating blend of genres and eras.

The album stands out for its seamless fusion of Scott-Heron's deep, gravelly voice and Jamie xx's modern electronic production. Jamie xx takes the raw, emotional content of Scott-Heron's original work and infuses it with elements of dubstep, UK garage, and house music, creating a soundscape that is both contemporary and respectful of Scott-Heron's legacy. This juxtaposition of styles highlights the timelessness of Scott-Heron's messages, making them accessible to a new generation of listeners.

Critically, "We're New Here" was well-received, praised for its innovative approach and the way it honors Scott-Heron's work while introducing it to a new audience. Reviewers noted Jamie xx's ability to maintain the integrity of the original tracks while adding his unique touch. The album was seen as a successful experiment in bridging the gap between different musical worlds, showcasing the potential of remix culture to breathe new life into existing works.

Among the standout tracks is "NY Is Killing Me," which combines Scott-Heron's poignant reflections on urban life with a pulsating beat and haunting synths. The track exemplifies the album's ability to merge lyrical depth with danceable rhythms. Another highlight is "I'll Take Care of U," which later gained additional fame when it was sampled by Drake and Rihanna for their hit "Take Care." Jamie xx's version retains the emotional weight of Scott-Heron's original while adding a lush, atmospheric quality.

"We're New Here" also holds cultural significance as it represents one of the final projects Scott-Heron was involved in before his passing in May 2011. The album serves as a testament to his enduring influence on music and culture, as well as his willingness to embrace new forms of expression. It also underscores the importance of collaboration across generations, with Jamie xx bringing his contemporary sensibilities to Scott-Heron's timeless themes.

The album did not win major awards, but its impact was felt in the music community, influencing artists and producers who saw the potential in blending different musical styles and eras. It also contributed to the growing recognition of Jamie xx as a talented producer capable of crafting innovative and emotionally resonant music.

In summary, "We're New Here" is a remarkable album that successfully bridges the gap between the past and the present. It pays homage to Gil Scott-Heron's legacy while showcasing Jamie xx's production prowess. The album's critical acclaim and cultural significance highlight its role in bringing Scott-Heron's work to a new audience and demonstrating the power of creative collaboration. With its standout tracks and innovative approach, "We're New Here" remains a noteworthy entry in the discographies of both artists, celebrating the enduring relevance of Scott-Heron's messages and the transformative potential of remix culture.
