Description

Tom Misch and Yussef Dayes have teamed up to create a sonic tapestry that is as vibrant as it is intricate with their collaborative album, "What Kinda Music." Released on April 24, 2020, this project showcases the duo's unique blend of jazz, soul, and hip-hop, resulting in a sound that feels both fresh and timeless. Misch, known for his virtuosic guitar skills and smooth vocals, pairs seamlessly with Dayes, a drummer whose innovative rhythms and textures elevate the music to new heights.

From the opening track, "What Kinda Music," listeners are greeted with a lush soundscape that sets the tone for the entire album. The track features a hypnotic groove, with Misch's guitar weaving in and out of Dayes' intricate drumming. The interplay between the two artists is palpable, creating a dialogue that feels both spontaneous and meticulously crafted. This synergy is a hallmark of the album, as each track unfolds like a conversation between two musical minds.

One of the standout tracks, "Nightrider," features a guest appearance from the talented rapper Freddie Gibbs. The song is a perfect example of how Misch and Dayes blend genres, with Gibbs' sharp verses layered over a smooth, jazzy instrumental. The production is rich and immersive, showcasing Misch's ability to create a sound that is both polished and organic. Critics have praised this track for its seamless fusion of styles, highlighting how it encapsulates the essence of the album.

The album also features the enchanting track "Lift Off," which showcases Misch's vocal prowess and songwriting skills. The song is a dreamy exploration of love and longing, with lush harmonies and a captivating melody that lingers long after the song ends. The production here is particularly noteworthy, as Dayes' drumming adds a layer of complexity that elevates the track beyond a simple love song. The chemistry between the two artists shines through, making it a fan favorite.

"What Kinda Music" has received critical acclaim from various publications, with many noting the album's ability to transcend genres. The Guardian praised it for its "effortless blend of jazz, soul, and hip-hop," while Pitchfork highlighted the duo's "remarkable chemistry" and the album's "adventurous spirit." This positive reception is a testament to the duo's artistry and their ability to push musical boundaries.

In terms of production, Misch and Dayes recorded the album in a variety of settings, including Misch's home studio. This intimate approach to recording allows for a rawness that is often missing in polished studio albums. The duo's willingness to experiment with sounds and structures is evident throughout the album, as they incorporate live instrumentation, samples, and electronic elements to create a rich auditory experience.

The cultural significance of "What Kinda Music" cannot be understated. In a time when the world was grappling with uncertainty, this album emerged as a beacon of creativity and collaboration. Misch and Dayes, both of whom have roots in the UK music scene, represent a new wave of artists who are redefining what it means to create music in the modern age. Their ability to blend genres and influences speaks to a generation that values diversity and innovation in art.

As the album progresses, tracks like "Isn't She Lovely" and "I Don't Wanna Know" further showcase the duo's versatility. Each song feels like a journey, with unexpected twists and turns that keep the listener engaged. The album's closing track, "The Last Dance," leaves a lasting impression, wrapping up the experience with a sense of reflection and nostalgia.

In conclusion, "What Kinda Music" is not just an album; it's an experience that invites listeners to explore the depths of musical collaboration. Tom Misch and Yussef Dayes have crafted a work that is both personal and universal, resonating with anyone who appreciates the beauty of music.
