Description
"Lioness: Hidden Treasures" is a posthumous compilation album by the immensely talented Amy Winehouse, released on 2 December 2011. This album serves as a poignant reminder of Amy's extraordinary artistry and the profound loss felt by the music world after her untimely passing in July 2011. Compiled by producers Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson, who had worked closely with Amy during her career, the album offers a mix of previously unreleased tracks, alternate versions, and covers, showcasing her versatility and depth as an artist.
Listening to "Lioness: Hidden Treasures" feels like rediscovering Amy's voice in a new light. The album opens with "Our Day Will Come", a reggae-infused cover of the 1963 classic by Ruby & the Romantics. Amy's rendition is both soulful and uplifting, a testament to her ability to breathe new life into older songs. Another standout is "Between the Cheats", a track that captures the retro, doo-wop-inspired sound that Amy was so fond of, paired with her signature lyrical wit and emotional depth.
One of the most touching moments on the album is "A Song for You", a cover of the Leon Russell classic. Recorded in one take in 2009, this track is raw and heartfelt, with Amy's voice conveying a vulnerability that is deeply moving. It's a stark reminder of her unparalleled ability to connect with listeners on an emotional level. Similarly, "Tears Dry (Original Version)" offers a stripped-down take on the song that appeared on her acclaimed "Back to Black" album, providing a glimpse into her creative process and the evolution of her music.
The album also includes "Like Smoke", a collaboration with rapper Nas, which highlights Amy's love for hip-hop and her seamless ability to blend genres. Nas's verses complement Amy's vocals beautifully, creating a track that feels both contemporary and timeless. "Valerie ('68 Version)" is another gem, offering a slower, more introspective take on the hit she recorded with Mark Ronson, allowing listeners to appreciate the nuances of her vocal delivery.
"Lioness: Hidden Treasures" received a mixed-to-positive reception upon its release. While some critics questioned the ethics of releasing posthumous material, many praised the album for its quality and the insight it provides into Amy's artistry. It debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart, a testament to the enduring love and admiration for Amy and her music.
This album is not just a collection of songs; it's a celebration of Amy Winehouse's legacy. It reminds us of her incredible talent, her unique voice, and her ability to convey complex emotions through her music. While it may not have the cohesive narrative of her studio albums, "Lioness: Hidden Treasures" offers fans a chance to hear Amy in a more intimate and unguarded way. It's a bittersweet experience, but one that reaffirms why Amy Winehouse remains one of the most beloved and influential artists of her generation.
