Description

Aretha Franklin's album "Sings The Great Diva Classics" was released on October 21, 2014, and it stands as a testament to her enduring legacy as the Queen of Soul. This album is a delightful collection where Aretha pays homage to some of the most iconic female vocalists by covering their classic hits. It's a celebration of divas, and who better to lead such a tribute than Aretha herself?

The album features ten tracks, each a cover of a song made famous by another legendary diva. Aretha's choice of songs spans several decades and genres, showcasing her versatility and deep respect for her fellow artists. From Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" to Etta James' "At Last," Aretha brings her unique touch to each track, infusing them with her soulful energy and powerful vocals.

One of the standout tracks is her rendition of "Rolling in the Deep," which seamlessly blends into "Ain't No Mountain High Enough." This medley not only highlights Aretha's vocal prowess but also her ability to reinterpret contemporary hits with a classic soul twist. Her version of "I Will Survive," originally by Gloria Gaynor, is another highlight, where she adds a gospel flair that elevates the song to new heights.

The production of the album is polished, with Clive Davis, a long-time collaborator and friend of Aretha, serving as the executive producer. The arrangements are modern yet respectful of the original compositions, allowing Aretha's voice to shine through. The album was recorded in various studios, including the famous Avatar Studios in New York City, ensuring top-notch sound quality.

Critically, "Sings The Great Diva Classics" received a warm reception. Many reviewers praised Aretha's ability to make each song her own while still honoring the original artists. The New York Times noted that Aretha "brings her own history and authority to these songs," while Rolling Stone highlighted her "undiminished vocal power." The album also performed well commercially, debuting at number 13 on the Billboard 200 chart and topping the Billboard R&B Albums chart.

Aretha Franklin's "Sings The Great Diva Classics" is more than just a cover album; it's a celebration of the female voice and its power to inspire and move audiences. Aretha's interpretations are not mere imitations but rather reinventions that breathe new life into these beloved songs. Her ability to connect with the material and convey emotion is as strong as ever, proving that her title as the Queen of Soul is well-deserved.

In terms of cultural significance, this album serves as a bridge between generations of music lovers. It introduces younger audiences to classic hits while allowing long-time fans to experience them anew through Aretha's lens. It's a reminder of the timelessness of great music and the impact of powerful female voices in the industry.

Overall, "Sings The Great Diva Classics" is a fitting tribute from one of music's greatest voices to her peers. It's an album that not only showcases Aretha Franklin's incredible talent but also her deep appreciation for the artistry of others. Whether you're a fan of the original songs or discovering them for the first time, this album is a must-listen for anyone who appreciates the art of singing and the legacy of the great divas.
