Description
"IV" is the fourth studio album by the Canadian instrumental group BadBadNotGood, released on July 8, 2016, by Innovative Leisure and Arts & Crafts. Known for their unique blend of jazz, hip-hop, and electronic music, BadBadNotGood (BBNG) has garnered a reputation for pushing the boundaries of genre and collaboration. "IV" is no exception, showcasing the band's growth and experimentation while featuring an array of guest artists that add depth and diversity to the album.
The core members of BadBadNotGood—Matthew Tavares (keyboards), Chester Hansen (bass), Alexander Sowinski (drums), and Leland Whitty (saxophone)—bring their individual talents and cohesive synergy to the forefront in "IV." This album marks the first time Whitty is officially credited as a full-time member, and his contributions are palpable throughout the record.
"IV" opens with "And That, Too," a track that sets the tone with its lush, atmospheric soundscapes and intricate instrumentation. The song seamlessly transitions into "Speaking Gently," which features a groovy bassline and smooth keyboard melodies, encapsulating the band's ability to create a laid-back yet engaging vibe.
One of the standout tracks on the album is "Time Moves Slow," featuring the soulful vocals of Future Islands' frontman Samuel T. Herring. Herring's emotive delivery pairs beautifully with the band's mellow, jazz-infused instrumentation, resulting in a hauntingly beautiful ballad that lingers long after the final note.
Another notable collaboration is "Lavender," which includes contributions from producer Kaytranada. The track's hypnotic beat and eerie synth lines create a sense of unease, further amplified by the later release of a remix featuring rapper Snoop Dogg. This version gained additional attention for its politically charged music video.
"IV" also features the talents of saxophonist Colin Stetson on "Confessions Pt. II," a track that highlights the band's jazz roots while incorporating modern production techniques. Stetson's powerful saxophone performance adds a layer of intensity and complexity to the composition, making it one of the album's most compelling pieces.
The instrumental "Chompy's Paradise" is a testament to BBNG's ability to craft intricate, dynamic arrangements without the need for vocals. The track's shifting rhythms and melodies keep the listener engaged, showcasing the band's technical prowess and creativity.
"IV" closes with "Cashmere," a sprawling, nine-minute epic that encapsulates the essence of the album. The track's gradual build-up and release of tension, combined with its rich, textured soundscapes, make for a fitting conclusion to a record that is both ambitious and cohesive.
Overall, "IV" is a testament to BadBadNotGood's evolution as a band. Their willingness to experiment with different genres and collaborate with a diverse range of artists has resulted in an album that is both innovative and accessible. The band's technical skill and creative vision are evident throughout, making "IV" a standout release in their discography.
For fans of jazz, hip-hop, and electronic music, "IV" offers a refreshing and engaging listening experience. BadBadNotGood has once again proven that they are not content to rest on their laurels, continually pushing the boundaries of what instrumental music can be. With "IV," they have solidified their place as one of the most exciting and forward-thinking groups in contemporary music.
