Description

Ben E. King's album "Don't Play That Song" was released on March 15, 1962, and it stands as a significant piece in the landscape of soul music. King's smooth, rich voice and heartfelt delivery have made this album a classic, and it showcases his ability to blend rhythm and blues with pop sensibilities. The album is particularly notable for its title track, "Don't Play That Song (You Lied)," which became one of King's signature songs and reached the top of the R&B charts.

The album features a collection of tracks that highlight King's vocal prowess and emotional depth. The title track, written by King himself along with his collaborator, is a poignant plea that resonates with anyone who has experienced heartbreak. The song's catchy melody and relatable lyrics helped it become a staple on radio stations and a favorite among fans. It’s hard not to get swept up in the emotion of the song, and King's delivery is nothing short of mesmerizing.

Another standout track is "I (Who Have Nothing)," which showcases King's ability to convey deep emotion through his singing. The song, originally an Italian ballad, was transformed by King into a powerful anthem of longing and despair. His rendition is often regarded as one of the definitive versions, and it has been covered by numerous artists over the years, including the legendary Shirley Bassey. The raw emotion in King's voice makes this track a highlight of the album and a testament to his artistry.

The album also includes tracks like "Go On, Get Out (And Let Me Be)" and "This Magic Moment," which further demonstrate King's versatility as an artist. The production on the album, handled by the legendary Jerry Wexler at Atlantic Records, is polished yet retains a soulful edge that complements King's vocal style perfectly. Wexler's expertise in blending different musical elements helped to create a sound that was both contemporary and timeless.

Critically, "Don't Play That Song" received positive reviews upon its release and has continued to be celebrated in the years since. Major publications like Rolling Stone and Billboard have recognized King's contributions to music, and the album is often cited in discussions about the evolution of soul music. King's influence can be seen in the work of countless artists who followed him, and his ability to convey emotion through song has left a lasting legacy.

In terms of awards, while "Don't Play That Song" itself may not have won specific accolades, Ben E. King was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, which speaks volumes about his impact on the music industry. Additionally, his song "Stand By Me," which was released later in his career, has become an iconic anthem and has been featured in numerous films and television shows, further solidifying his place in music history.

One interesting tidbit about the album is that it was recorded during a time when King was transitioning from his earlier work with The Drifters to a successful solo career. This album marked a significant step in that journey, showcasing his ability to stand out as a solo artist while still drawing on the rich musical traditions that influenced him.

Overall, "Don't Play That Song" is a must-listen for anyone interested in the roots of soul music. Ben E. King's heartfelt performances and the album's timeless production make it a classic that continues to resonate with listeners today. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to King's music, this album is sure to leave a lasting impression.
