Description

Jordan Rakei's "Origin," released in June 2019, is a compelling exploration of futuristic themes wrapped in a rich tapestry of soul, R&B, and electronic influences. The New Zealand-born, London-based artist has crafted an album that delves into the complexities of human connection and the potential dystopian future that technology might bring. This is Rakei's third studio album, following the critically acclaimed "Wallflower" in 2017, and it showcases his growth as a musician and a storyteller.

"Origin" is notable for its conceptual depth, as Rakei draws inspiration from dystopian narratives and the increasing role of technology in our lives. The album's thematic concerns are reflected in its lyrics, which often ponder the implications of artificial intelligence and the erosion of genuine human interaction. This is particularly evident in tracks like "Say Something," where Rakei urges listeners to engage in meaningful communication amidst the noise of the digital age. The song's infectious groove and poignant message make it one of the standout tracks on the album.

Musically, "Origin" is a lush and sophisticated blend of genres. Rakei's ability to seamlessly fuse elements of soul, jazz, and electronic music is on full display, creating a sound that is both contemporary and timeless. His smooth, soulful voice is the perfect vehicle for the album's introspective lyrics, and his production skills shine through in the intricate arrangements and polished soundscapes. Tracks like "Mind's Eye" and "Rolling into One" exemplify Rakei's knack for crafting songs that are both sonically rich and emotionally resonant.

"Mind's Eye," the album's lead single, is a prime example of Rakei's thematic and musical ambitions. The song explores the concept of virtual reality and its potential to distort our perception of reality. Its hypnotic beat and layered instrumentation create an immersive listening experience that mirrors the song's subject matter. Similarly, "Rolling into One" addresses the blurring lines between human and machine, with a driving rhythm and haunting melodies that linger long after the track ends.

Critically, "Origin" was well-received, with many reviewers praising Rakei's ability to tackle complex themes while maintaining a strong sense of musicality. The album was noted for its cohesive sound and the maturity of its songwriting, solidifying Rakei's reputation as a talented and innovative artist. While "Origin" may not have garnered major awards, it has certainly contributed to Rakei's growing influence in the music world and has resonated with fans who appreciate its thoughtful exploration of contemporary issues.

In addition to its thematic and musical strengths, "Origin" is also significant for its collaborative spirit. Rakei worked with a number of talented musicians and producers to bring the album to life, including frequent collaborator Jim Macrae. This collaborative approach adds depth and diversity to the album's sound, as evidenced by the varied yet cohesive tracks that make up the record.

Overall, "Origin" is a testament to Jordan Rakei's artistry and vision. It is an album that challenges listeners to reflect on the role of technology in their lives while offering a rich and rewarding musical experience. With its blend of thought-provoking themes and captivating soundscapes, "Origin" stands as a significant work in Rakei's discography and a noteworthy contribution to the contemporary music landscape.
