Description
A choir sighs into motion under flickering stage lights. Me'Shell NdegeOcello’s No More Water, The Gospel Of James Baldwin (2LP) is a patient, artful reckoning with Baldwin’s words and their echo in modern rhythm. She leans into upright-and-synth bass dialogues, organ swells, and spoken testimony, shaping something closer to a service than a song cycle. Listen for the hushed organ prelude that blooms into a call-and-response benediction, the nimble bass figure that shadows a Baldwin passage from The Fire Next Time, and a late-album reprise where brushed snare and muted trumpet tilt the mood toward hope. Spread across two discs, the music breathes and the low end sits deeper. File it beside Gil Scott-Heron’s more reflective sides, though NdegeOcello’s producerly ear makes the harmonies more porous and the groove more elastic. If you’d prefer to keep it simple, you can buy Me'Shell NdegeOcello records online with us. Her bass sits at the centre, not flashy, just unwavering, and the voices around it carry the text with care. The sequence rewards a quiet room as much as a late drive across the city. It’s thoughtful rather than showy, and it lingers. Available to order online or in our Melbourne record store, your crate needs this one.
