Spanning their career from 1990 to 1998, "The Anthology" includes tracks from all five of their studio albums, as well as a few rarities and remixes, offering a well-rounded overview of their innovative sound.
The album opens with "Check the Rhime," a quintessential track from their 1991 album "The Low End Theory." This song exemplifies the group's signature style, blending jazz-infused beats with clever, socially conscious lyrics. The interplay between Q-Tip and Phife Dawg is seamless, showcasing their unique chemistry and lyrical prowess. "The Anthology" also features "Award Tour," a standout track from their third album, "Midnight Marauders." This song, with its infectious hook and upbeat tempo, became one of the group's most commercially successful singles, reaching the top of the Billboard Hot Rap Singles chart.
One of the highlights of "The Anthology" is "Scenario," a collaboration with Leaders of the New School. The inclusion of "Scenario" underscores A Tribe Called Quest's ability to bring together different voices and styles, creating a dynamic and engaging listening experience.
"The Anthology" also includes "Electric Relaxation," another fan favorite from "Midnight Marauders." This track is a perfect example of the group's ability to create smooth, laid-back grooves that still pack a lyrical punch. The production, characterized by its jazzy samples and mellow vibe, highlights the innovative approach that A Tribe Called Quest brought to hip-hop during the 1990s.
