Description
Because The Internet is the sophomore album from Childish Gambino, the stage name of Grammy, Golden Globe, and Emmy Award-winning recording artist, actor, and producer Donald Glover. Released in 2013, the album lends perspective to the complications born from an Internet-obsessed society. In creating Because The Internet, Glover set out to not just release an album but to build a world, also releasing a companion screenplay and short film, ''Clapping For The Wrong Reasons.''
Because The Internet is presented on 2LP 12'' 180g vinyl, comprises 19 songs including ''3005'' and ''Sweatpants'', and features appearances from Chance The Rapper, Jhene Aiko, and Azaelia Banks. "Because The Internet," released in 2013, is Childish Gambino's (Donald Glover's musical pseudonym) second studio album, serving as a significant pivot point in his music career. This project is not just an album; it's an ambitious, multi-platform experience that includes a screenplay, visual components, and an interactive online presence, all aimed at exploring the nuances of life in the digital age. Glover's vision for this album was to create a narrative that mirrors the fragmented, nonlinear nature of online interactions and the impact of the internet on human relationships and self-identity.
The album kicks off with "The Library (Intro)," a brief snippet that immediately sets the tone for the eclectic nature of the project. From there, it dives into "I. The Crawl" and "II. Worldstar," tracks that blend sharp social commentary with Glover's signature blend of rap, singing, and a diverse array of musical styles, ranging from hip-hop to electronic, funk, and R&B. The production on these tracks, and throughout the album, is layered and intricate, showcasing Glover's growth as an artist and his willingness to push boundaries.
One of the album's standout tracks, "3005," serves as a keystone, encapsulating the album's themes of loneliness, the search for meaning, and the craving for genuine connection in an increasingly digital world. The song combines catchy hooks with introspective lyrics, creating a contrast that is both thought-provoking and musically engaging.
"IV. Sweatpants" and "V. 3005" highlight Glover's adeptness at weaving together complex rhymes and beats with existential musings and commentary on fame, identity, and the superficiality of the digital age. The production, handled by Glover along with a range of collaborators including Ludwig Göransson, is innovative and varied, providing a rich sonic backdrop that complements the album's thematic depth.
The screenplay that accompanies the album adds another layer to the experience, allowing listeners to engage with the music in a narrative context. The story follows the protagonist, The Boy, through a series of vignettes that reflect the disjointed, surreal quality of online existence. This narrative device not only enriches the album's content but also challenges the traditional format of musical albums, inviting listeners to explore the relationship between story and song.
"Because The Internet" is also notable for its exploration of Glover's personal struggles and vulnerabilities. Tracks like "No Exit" and "Flight of the Navigator" offer a glimpse into the artist's internal battles, presenting a stark contrast to the more outward-facing commentary on society and technology. These moments of introspection add depth to the album, making it not just a critique of the digital age but also a deeply personal work.
The album concludes with "Life: The Biggest Troll [Andrew Auernheimer]," a track that encapsulates the project's themes and leaves listeners with a lingering sense of ambiguity and introspection. The song's abrupt end, followed by silence, serves as a poignant commentary on the transient, ephemeral nature of digital interactions and the search for meaning in a connected yet disconnected world.
In conclusion, "Because The Internet" is a bold, multifaceted project that defies easy categorization. It stands as a testament to Glover's artistic vision and his ability to blend diverse musical styles with profound thematic content. The album is not just a collection of songs but an immersive experience that challenges listeners to reflect on their relationship with technology, society, and themselves. Its relevance has only grown in the years since its release, solidifying its place as a landmark work in the digital era.
