Description
Erykah Badu's third studio album, Worldwide Underground, released on September 16, 2003, is a fascinating exploration of neo-soul, funk, and hip-hop. Known for her unique voice and deeply personal songwriting, Badu takes a more experimental approach with this record, creating an album that feels like a jam session, full of spontaneity and groove.
The album opens with "Bump It", a track that sets the tone for the entire record. It's laid-back yet funky, with Badu's vocals gliding effortlessly over the beat. The production throughout the album is lush and layered, with a heavy emphasis on live instrumentation. This gives the record a warm, organic feel, as if you're sitting in the room with the musicians as they play.
One of the standout tracks is "Back in the Day (Puff)", which reminisces about simpler times and the joy of music. It's a nostalgic and heartfelt song that showcases Badu's ability to connect with her audience on a personal level. Another highlight is "I Want You", a sprawling, hypnotic track that clocks in at over ten minutes. It's a testament to Badu's willingness to push boundaries and experiment with song structure.
Worldwide Underground also features some notable collaborations. "Love of My Life Worldwide" brings together Angie Stone, Bahamadia, and Queen Latifah for a celebration of hip-hop and its influence on their lives. The chemistry between the artists is palpable, and the track is a standout moment on the album.
Critics praised the album for its adventurous spirit and Badu's willingness to take risks. While some noted that it felt more like an extended EP or a mixtape than a traditional album, this was part of its charm. Badu herself referred to it as an "underground" project, a departure from the more polished sound of her earlier work.
The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album, and "Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip Hop)", a single from the album, won the Grammy for Best R&B Song. This track, which features Common, is a love letter to hip-hop and one of the most memorable songs on the record.
Worldwide Underground is a testament to Erykah Badu's artistry and her ability to evolve as an artist. It's an album that rewards repeated listens, with new details and nuances revealing themselves each time. For fans of neo-soul and anyone looking for music that pushes boundaries, this album is a must-listen.
