H.E.R.'s compilation album "I Used to Know Her" is a profound exploration of identity, love, and self-discovery, showcasing the artist's versatility and depth. Released on August 30, 2019, the album compiles tracks from her two previous EPs, "I Used to Know Her: The Prelude" and "I Used to Know Her: Part 2," along with additional new songs. This body of work further cements H.E.R.'s place in contemporary R&B, blending elements of soul, hip-hop, and pop to create a sound that is both modern and timeless.

The album opens with "Lost Souls," featuring DJ Scratch, which pays homage to Lauryn Hill's "Lost Ones." This track sets the tone for the album, with H.E.R. addressing themes of authenticity and the pressures of the music industry. Her lyrical prowess is evident as she navigates complex emotions and societal issues, a recurring theme throughout the album. "Fate" and "Carried Away" continue this introspective journey, with H.E.R.'s soulful voice and poignant lyrics drawing listeners into her world.

One of the standout tracks, "Hard Place," received significant acclaim and was nominated for several awards, including a Grammy for Song of the Year. The song's raw emotion and relatable themes of love and conflict resonate deeply with audiences, showcasing H.E.R.'s ability to connect on a personal level. "Hard Place" exemplifies her skill in blending acoustic elements with contemporary R&B, creating a sound that is both fresh and familiar.

"I Used to Know Her" also features collaborations that highlight H.E.R.'s ability to seamlessly blend genres. "Racks," featuring YBN Cordae, is a perfect example of this, combining hip-hop beats with soulful melodies. The chemistry between H.E.R. and Cordae is palpable, resulting in a track that is both catchy and thought-provoking. "21" is another highlight, where H.E.R. reflects on her journey and the challenges of growing up in the public eye.

The album showcases her growth as an artist, building on the success of her previous releases while exploring new musical territories. Critics have noted her ability to tackle complex themes with grace and authenticity, making her a standout figure in the R&B genre.

H.E.R.'s impact on the music industry extends beyond her vocal talent. She has become a symbol of empowerment and authenticity, often using her platform to address social issues and advocate for change. Her decision to maintain a level of anonymity early in her career allowed her music to speak for itself, creating a sense of mystery and intrigue that has only added to her appeal.

In terms of cultural significance, "I Used to Know Her" reflects the experiences and struggles of a generation seeking identity and purpose. H.E.R.'s ability to articulate these feelings through her music has resonated with fans worldwide, making her a voice for those navigating similar journeys. The album's blend of introspection and social commentary offers a mirror to the complexities of modern life, making it both a personal and universal experience.

Overall, "I Used to Know Her" is a testament to H.E.R.'s artistry and vision. It captures the essence of her musical journey, offering a glimpse into her world while inviting listeners to reflect on their own. With its blend of soulful melodies, insightful lyrics, and genre-defying sound, the album solidifies H.E.R.'s status as one of the most compelling artists of her generation.
