With its release, "Under Construction" solidified Missy’s status as a leading figure in the genre, and it was met with critical acclaim, earning her several award nominations, including a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album.
From the very first track, you can feel the energy and creativity that Missy Elliott brings to the table. The album opens with "Go to the Floor," a high-energy track that sets the tone for what’s to come. One of the standout tracks, "Work It," became an anthem of the early 2000s, showcasing Missy’s clever wordplay and infectious hooks. The song was not only a commercial success, reaching the top of the charts, but it also won a Grammy for Best Female Rap Solo Performance. Its iconic chorus and innovative production, featuring a reversed vocal sample, have made it a timeless classic.
Another notable track is "Gossip Folks," featuring the legendary Ludacris. This song is a perfect example of Missy’s ability to collaborate with other artists while still maintaining her unique sound. The playful lyrics and catchy beat make it a fun listen, and it’s clear that both artists had a blast creating it. The production on this album, handled by Missy herself along with Timbaland, is nothing short of groundbreaking. They pushed the boundaries of hip-hop production, incorporating elements of R&B, funk, and even rock, which contributed to the album's diverse sound.
"Under Construction" also features the heartfelt track "Nothing Out There for Me," which showcases a more vulnerable side of Missy. The song deals with themes of love and self-reflection, proving that she is not just a rapper but a multifaceted artist capable of conveying deep emotions through her music. This balance of fun, upbeat tracks and more serious, introspective songs is part of what makes the album so compelling.
Critics praised "Under Construction" for its innovative sound and Missy’s lyrical prowess. Major publications like Rolling Stone and Pitchfork lauded the album, highlighting its cultural significance in the hip-hop landscape. The album is often cited as a pivotal moment in the evolution of female rappers, as Missy Elliott broke barriers and set new standards for what women could achieve in a male-dominated industry.
One interesting aspect of the album is its title, "Under Construction," which reflects Missy’s own journey of growth and transformation as an artist. In interviews, she has mentioned that the album represents her taking time to reflect on her career and the changes she wanted to make moving forward. This theme of construction and rebuilding resonates throughout the album, both in its sound and its lyrical content.
