Run-DMC - Raising Hell LP Vinyl Record

Raising Hell is the third album by hip hop group Run-D.M.C. released on May 27, 1986 by Profile Records. The album was produced by Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin, and became the first Platinum and multi-Platinum hip hop record.

Raising Hell is considered to be the first rap rock collaboration that also brought hip-hop into the mainstream and was the first song by a hip hop act to reach the top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100. In 2018, it was inducted into the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or artistically significant". Selling more than three million copies, Raising Hell is credited with heralding the golden age of hip hop as well as hip hop's album era, helping the genre achieve an unprecedented level of recognition among critics.

Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic said about the album "Where other rap records, including Run-D.M.C.'s, were all about the rhythm, this is layered with sounds and ideas, giving the music a tangible flow. But the brilliance of this record is that even with this increased musical depth, it still rocks as hard as hell, and in a manner that brought in a new audience."

"Raising Hell" by Run-DMC is a landmark album in the history of hip-hop, released on May 15, 1986. This album is often credited with bringing hip-hop into the mainstream and is considered one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time. It was produced by the legendary Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons, who were instrumental in shaping the sound of the genre during the 1980s.

One of the most significant aspects of "Raising Hell" is its crossover appeal. The album features the iconic track "Walk This Way," a collaboration with rock band Aerosmith. This song was a groundbreaking fusion of rock and rap, and it played a crucial role in bridging the gap between the two genres. The music video for "Walk This Way" received heavy rotation on MTV, which was a big deal at the time, as it helped introduce hip-hop to a wider audience that might not have been exposed to it otherwise.

The album was a commercial success, reaching number 3 on the Billboard 200 chart and eventually being certified triple platinum. It was the first hip-hop album to achieve such high sales, which was a testament to its broad appeal and the growing popularity of the genre. "Raising Hell" was also nominated for a Grammy Award, marking one of the first times a hip-hop album received such recognition.

Critically, "Raising Hell" was well-received. Publications like Rolling Stone praised the album for its innovative sound and the way it pushed the boundaries of what hip-hop could be. The production by Rick Rubin was noted for its stripped-down, hard-hitting beats that complemented the powerful delivery of Run-DMC's lyrics. The duo of Joseph "Run" Simmons and Darryl "DMC" McDaniels, along with their DJ, Jam Master Jay, brought a raw energy and charisma that resonated with listeners.

Beyond "Walk This Way," the album features several other standout tracks. "It's Tricky" is another fan favorite, known for its catchy hook and playful lyrics. "My Adidas" is a track that not only celebrated the group's love for the iconic sneaker brand but also highlighted the growing influence of hip-hop culture on fashion. "Peter Piper" showcases Jam Master Jay's skills on the turntables, with its infectious beat and clever wordplay.

The cultural impact of "Raising Hell" cannot be overstated. It helped solidify hip-hop as a dominant force in music and paved the way for future artists to explore the genre's potential. The album's success also demonstrated that hip-hop could be commercially viable, encouraging record labels to invest more in the genre.

In interviews, members of Run-DMC have often reflected on the making of "Raising Hell" with fondness. They have spoken about how they wanted to create something that was true to their roots while also pushing the boundaries of what was possible in music. The collaboration with Aerosmith was initially met with skepticism, but it turned out to be a masterstroke that changed the course of music history.

Overall, "Raising Hell" is a classic album that continues to influence artists across genres. Its blend of rock and rap, along with its bold, innovative sound, makes it a timeless piece of music history. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to Run-DMC's music, "Raising Hell" is an album that deserves a listen for its historical significance and sheer musical brilliance.
