Description

Tony Williams’ cymbal skip under New Monastery snaps the band into focus, then lets Eric Dolphy slide in sideways. Andrew Hill’s Point Of Departure (LP) is that perfect middle ground where advanced composition meets open-ended interplay. Cut in 1964 with Joe Henderson, Kenny Dorham, Richard Davis, Williams, and Dolphy, it’s exploratory without losing its blues sense. Refuge surges with knotty horn lines that keep reshaping, while Flight 19 leans into Dolphy’s bass clarinet to pull the harmony at unusual angles. Dedication is the quiet tell: Hill’s voicings are sparse but loaded with intent.

This pressing gives the music breathing room, so you can follow each line as it weaves through Hill’s changes. Low end sits deeper, imaging is clearer. For anyone filing their shelves by conversation, it belongs right next to Eric Dolphy’s Out to Lunch!

If you’d rather order online, you can buy Andrew Hill records online with us.

It’s a record to play when the house is calm and you want to hear players think in real time, each choice audible, nothing rushed. The cover art still looks sharp in the sleeve, and the session’s balance feels true to how it was captured. You won’t mistake it for hard bop comfort, but it rewards every return.

Order online now or swing past our Preston shop to pick it up.
