Description
Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers' album Indestructible! is a testament to the enduring power and vitality of hard bop jazz. Released in 1966 on the Blue Note label, this record captures the essence of Blakey's leadership and the remarkable synergy of his ensemble during this period. Known for his ability to foster young talent and create a cohesive sound, Blakey once again assembled a stellar lineup for this recording, featuring Lee Morgan on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, Cedar Walton on piano, and Reggie Workman on bass.
The album opens with "The Egyptian", a composition by Curtis Fuller that immediately sets the tone with its intricate melodies and dynamic interplay. The track showcases the group's ability to balance structured arrangements with improvisational freedom, a hallmark of The Jazz Messengers' style. Lee Morgan's trumpet work is particularly striking here, blending fiery intensity with lyrical sensitivity.
Another standout track is "Sortie", penned by Cedar Walton. This piece highlights Walton's compositional prowess and the ensemble's tight cohesion. Wayne Shorter's tenor saxophone solo is a masterclass in storytelling through music, weaving complex ideas with emotional depth. Blakey's drumming, as always, provides a driving force that propels the music forward while maintaining a sense of swing and groove.
"Calling Miss Khadija" and "When Love is New" further demonstrate the group's versatility and ability to convey a wide range of emotions. The former, another Fuller composition, features a compelling blend of modal and hard bop elements, while the latter, written by Walton, offers a more introspective and lyrical approach. Both tracks benefit from the ensemble's impeccable sense of timing and dynamics.
The album closes with "Mr. Jin", a piece that encapsulates the spirit of The Jazz Messengers. The interplay between the horns, the rhythm section's infectious groove, and Blakey's commanding presence behind the kit make for a fitting conclusion to this remarkable record.
Indestructible! is not only a showcase of individual talent but also a celebration of collective artistry. Each member of the ensemble brings their unique voice to the table, yet the music remains cohesive and unified. This balance is a testament to Blakey's leadership and his ability to create an environment where musicians can thrive.
While Indestructible! may not be as widely celebrated as some of The Jazz Messengers' earlier works, it remains a vital part of their discography and a shining example of the hard bop genre. The album's title is fitting, as it reflects the enduring legacy of Art Blakey and his contributions to jazz. For fans of the genre and newcomers alike, Indestructible! is a must-listen, offering a glimpse into the brilliance of one of jazz's most iconic ensembles.
