Description

Artemis, the collaborative project led by the talented drummer and composer, Tyshawn Sorey, has released their latest album, "In Real Time," and it’s a stunning exploration of sound that pushes the boundaries of contemporary jazz. Released on September 29, 2023, this album is a testament to the power of improvisation and the deep musical conversations that can occur within a group of skilled musicians. Sorey, known for his innovative approach to rhythm and texture, has assembled a remarkable ensemble for this project, featuring the likes of pianist and composer, Jason Moran, trumpeter, Ambrose Akinmusire, and bassist, Linda May Han Oh, among others.

From the very first track, "The Way of the World," listeners are drawn into a sonic landscape that feels both expansive and intimate. The interplay between the musicians is palpable, with each note and rhythm feeling like a dialogue rather than a performance. Sorey’s drumming is both intricate and fluid, providing a backbone that allows the other musicians to explore their own ideas while remaining anchored in a cohesive sound. The track ebbs and flows, showcasing the group’s ability to build tension and release it in a way that feels organic and unforced.

One of the standout tracks, "Echoes of the Past," features a haunting melody that lingers long after the song has ended. Akinmusire’s trumpet work here is particularly noteworthy; he plays with a sense of vulnerability that is both captivating and heart-wrenching. The way he weaves in and out of the melody, sometimes soaring above it and at other times grounding it with a more subdued tone, is a masterclass in emotional expression. The track also highlights the exceptional chemistry within the group, as each musician responds to Akinmusire’s lead with their own unique voice, creating a rich tapestry of sound.

The production of "In Real Time" is another aspect that deserves attention. Recorded in a live setting, the album captures the raw energy of the performance, allowing listeners to feel as if they are part of the audience. The decision to record live adds an element of spontaneity that is often missing in studio albums, and it’s clear that Sorey and his bandmates thrive in this environment. The sound is crisp and clear, with each instrument occupying its own space in the mix, allowing for a full appreciation of the intricate arrangements and improvisational flourishes.

Critics have been quick to praise "In Real Time," with publications like DownBeat and JazzTimes highlighting its innovative approach and emotional depth. The album has been described as a significant contribution to the modern jazz canon, with its blend of traditional jazz elements and contemporary influences. It’s a record that not only showcases the individual talents of its members but also emphasizes the importance of collaboration and collective creativity in music.

Sorey himself has spoken about the importance of this project, noting in interviews that he wanted to create a space where musicians could express themselves freely and authentically. This ethos is evident throughout the album, as each track feels like a journey rather than a destination. The musicians are not just playing notes; they are telling stories, sharing experiences, and inviting the listener to join them on this exploration.

As the album progresses, tracks like "Transcendence" and "In the Moment" further illustrate the group’s ability to blend genres and styles, incorporating elements of classical music, avant-garde, and even hints of electronic soundscapes. This genre-bending approach is refreshing and speaks to the versatility of the musicians involved. It’s a reminder that jazz is not a stagnant genre but one that continues to evolve and adapt, reflecting the world around it.

In conclusion, "In Real Time" is more than just an album; it’s an experience. Tyshawn Sorey and his ensemble have crafted a work that is both intellectually stimulating and emotionally resonant. It invites listeners to engage with the music on multiple levels, whether they are seasoned jazz aficionados or newcomers to the genre. This album is a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and the timeless power of music to connect us all.
