Description

Recorded in 1960 for ABC-Paramount, The Modern Sound Of Betty Carter catches her between bop daring and torch clarity. Rather than small-combo sparseness, she threads a big-band-and-strings setting with sly, elastic time. On What a Little Moonlight Can Do, the off-beat scoops into the first chorus feel like a dare to the brass. This LP pressing opens up the room; there’s more space around the orchestra and the low end sits deeper. File it next to Sarah Vaughan’s early-60s sessions, but Carter’s phrasing is edgier and the humor drier. Perfect for a late drive when you want the band to shimmer but the voice to lead. If you’d rather order from home, you can buy Betty Carter records online with us. Highlights also include the way she stretches a last syllable just long enough to flip the groove, then snaps back in the pocket. A short horn break peeks through her phrasing and gives the rhythm section a wink. Classic material, presented with care. Uptempos flicker rather than rush, and the ballads hang in the air without sagging. It’s a smart pick if your jazz vocal shelf skews to the early 60s and you like phrasing with a bit of bite.

Available online now or in our Melbourne shop, an easy pick for any Betty Carter fan.
