Description
Two sessions, two bands: Blue Note captured Bud Powell in 1949 with Fats Navarro and a young Sonny Rollins, then again in 1951 with Curly Russell and Max Roach in a lean trio. You can feel the contrast straight away. Navarro and Rollins dart through Bouncing with Bud and Dance of the Infidels, Powell stabbing accents between their lines. Then Un Poco Loco shifts the room entirely, its obsessive left-hand figure circling while Roach’s clipped ride keeps the tension just right.
This LP pressing opens the music up, giving more space around the piano and sharpening the transients so Powell’s touch really speaks. Even on a modest Melbourne setup, the interplay is easier to place, and the momentum carries you from one chorus to the next.
It sits comfortably beside Thelonious Monk on a shelf of late-40s bop, but Powell’s lines are more torrential, less angular, and the band chemistry here is its own kind of electricity. If you’d rather order online, you can buy Bud Powell records online with us. For anyone curious where modern jazz piano found its propulsive spark, this is a concise, essential snapshot of the moment.
Crack it open for a late-night read or a slow Sunday, and let those small details—the cymbal chatter, the offhanded grace of Powell’s comping—do their quiet work. Perfect for anyone building a record collection, buy online or in store today.
