Description

In Toronto, May ’53, Parker, Gillespie, Powell, Mingus and Roach gathered for one night at Massey Hall, Bird on a borrowed plastic alto. This 3LP Hot House: The Complete Jazz At Massey Hall Recordings maps the drama, from Roach’s press rolls launching Salt Peanuts to the tight unison on Hot House and a fierce A Night in Tunisia. You hear five giants conversing, sometimes competing, always swinging.

Compared with old single-disc versions, this pressing opens the room. Low end sits deeper and there’s more space around each horn, so Mingus’s lines speak rather than blur.

History buffs will clock the credit quirks and the later bass touch-ups, but the music wins either way. It belongs next to early Miles Davis or your first-wave hard bop shelf, bridging bebop bravura with what came next. If you’d rather order online, you can buy Charlie Parker records online with us.

I reach for this when Sunday coffee needs a spark and a reminder that risk can sound joyful. Powell’s comping behind Bird on Hot House catches a grin, and Gillespie’s muted asides are pure theatre. The trio detours let Powell stretch without crowding.

Add it to your collection today, available online or in our Melbourne record store.
