Description

Charlie Watts, the legendary drummer of The Rolling Stones, is celebrated not only for his impeccable rhythm and understated style but also for his deep love of jazz and blues. His album "Anthology" is a testament to his musical versatility and passion for the genres that inspired him throughout his life. Released posthumously in 2023, "Anthology" serves as a curated collection of Watts' work outside of his Rolling Stones fame, showcasing his contributions to jazz and his collaborations with other talented musicians.

"Anthology" is a treasure trove for fans of Charlie Watts and jazz enthusiasts alike. The album spans decades of Watts' career, featuring tracks from his various jazz projects, including the Charlie Watts Orchestra, the Charlie Watts Quintet, and the Charlie Watts Tentet. Each track is a window into Watts' musical soul, revealing his deep respect for the art of jazz and his ability to bring together exceptional musicians to create something truly special.

One of the standout aspects of "Anthology" is its diversity. The album includes everything from big band arrangements to intimate small group performances, highlighting Watts' adaptability as a musician. His drumming, always tasteful and precise, provides the perfect foundation for the other musicians to shine. Watts was never one to seek the spotlight, and this humility is evident throughout the album. Instead, he focused on creating a cohesive sound, allowing the music to take centre stage.

Tracks like "Stompin' at the Savoy" and "Lester Leaps In" showcase Watts' love for swing and bebop, while pieces like "Long Ago and Far Away" reveal his appreciation for ballads and more introspective compositions. The album also features some of Watts' collaborations with jazz greats, further cementing his status as a respected figure in the jazz world. Listening to "Anthology", one can't help but admire Watts' dedication to his craft and his ability to bring out the best in those he played with.

The production of "Anthology" is top-notch, with each track carefully remastered to highlight the nuances of the performances. The album feels like a labour of love, a fitting tribute to a musician who gave so much to the world of music. It's clear that great care was taken in selecting the tracks, ensuring that the album represents the breadth and depth of Watts' jazz career.

"Anthology" is more than just a collection of songs; it's a celebration of Charlie Watts' life and legacy. For fans of The Rolling Stones, it offers a glimpse into a different side of Watts, one that might not have been as well-known but is equally impressive. For jazz fans, it's a chance to appreciate the work of a drummer who truly understood the essence of the genre.

In conclusion, "Anthology" is a must-listen for anyone who appreciates great music. It's a reminder of Charlie Watts' immense talent and his unwavering commitment to his art. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to his jazz work, this album is sure to leave a lasting impression. Charlie Watts may no longer be with us, but his music will continue to inspire and bring joy to listeners for generations to come.
