Description

Dexter Gordon's 1961 album Doin' Allright is a quintessential example of the tenor saxophonist's ability to blend lyrical phrasing with a robust, commanding tone. Released on the iconic Blue Note label, this record marked Gordon's return to the jazz scene after a period of relative inactivity in the late 1950s. It’s a triumphant statement, showcasing his artistry and reaffirming his place among the greats of the bebop and hard bop eras.

The album opens with "I Was Doing All Right", a Gershwin standard that sets the tone for the record. Gordon's tenor saxophone sings with a warm, expressive quality, and his improvisations are both inventive and deeply rooted in the melody. The rhythm section, featuring pianist Horace Parlan, bassist George Tucker, and drummer Al Harewood, provides a swinging, supportive foundation, while trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, a rising star at the time, adds a youthful energy to the ensemble.

One of the standout tracks is "You've Changed", a ballad that highlights Gordon's ability to convey emotion through his instrument. His playing is tender and introspective, with a sense of vulnerability that draws the listener in. The interplay between Gordon and Parlan is particularly striking, as the pianist's delicate touch complements the saxophonist's rich, resonant tone.

"Society Red", an original composition by Gordon, is another highlight. This bluesy, up-tempo number showcases the saxophonist's technical prowess and his knack for crafting memorable melodies. Hubbard's fiery trumpet solo is a perfect counterpoint to Gordon's more laid-back approach, and the rhythm section drives the tune with an infectious groove.

The album closes with "It's You or No One", a brisk, bebop-infused track that demonstrates Gordon's agility and command of the tenor saxophone. His solos are full of clever twists and turns, and the entire band plays with a sense of joy and camaraderie that is palpable.

Doin' Allright was well-received upon its release and remains a beloved entry in Dexter Gordon's discography. It captures a pivotal moment in his career, as he reestablished himself as a leading voice in jazz. The album's blend of standards and original compositions, combined with the stellar performances of all the musicians involved, makes it a timeless classic that continues to resonate with listeners today.
