Description
Dexter Gordon's 1962 album Go! is often heralded as one of the quintessential hard bop records of its era, and for good reason. Recorded on August 27, 1962, and released on the iconic Blue Note label, the album captures Gordon at the height of his powers, delivering a performance that is both technically masterful and emotionally resonant. With Sonny Clark on piano, Butch Warren on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums, the quartet achieves a remarkable synergy, creating a sound that is both relaxed and deeply engaging.
From the opening notes of "Cheese Cake", the album's first track, it's clear that Gordon is in his element. His tenor saxophone tone is warm and inviting, yet it carries a sense of authority that commands attention. The melody is catchy and memorable, and Gordon's improvisation is both inventive and rooted in the blues tradition. Sonny Clark's piano comping and soloing complement Gordon beautifully, while Warren and Higgins provide a swinging, rock-solid foundation.
One of the standout tracks on the album is "I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry", a ballad that showcases Gordon's ability to convey deep emotion through his instrument. His phrasing is lyrical and expressive, and he takes his time to let the melody breathe. The rhythm section provides sensitive accompaniment, allowing Gordon's saxophone to shine.
"Second Balcony Jump" is another highlight, a lively and upbeat tune that demonstrates the quartet's chemistry and Gordon's command of the bebop language. The interplay between the musicians is a joy to listen to, with each member contributing to the overall energy and drive of the performance.
The production quality of Go! is also worth noting. Blue Note's producer Alfred Lion and engineer Rudy Van Gelder were known for their meticulous attention to detail, and this album is no exception. The sound is crisp and clear, with each instrument perfectly balanced in the mix. The result is an album that sounds as fresh and vibrant today as it did over six decades ago.
Go! has been widely praised by critics and fans alike, and it remains a cornerstone of Dexter Gordon's discography. It's an album that captures the essence of what makes jazz such a timeless and captivating art form: the interplay between musicians, the balance of structure and spontaneity, and the ability to convey a wide range of emotions through sound. Whether you're a longtime jazz aficionado or a newcomer to the genre, Go! is an album that deserves a place in your collection.
