Description

Diana Krall’s "Turn Up the Quiet" is a masterclass in jazz that showcases her signature blend of sultry vocals and impeccable piano skills. Released on May 5, 2017, this album marks a return to the intimate, classic jazz sound that Krall has been celebrated for throughout her career. With a collection of standards and a few lesser-known gems, Krall invites listeners into a world where the nuances of each note and lyric are savored like a fine wine.

From the opening track, a tender rendition of "Like Someone in Love," Krall sets the tone for the album. Her voice, rich and velvety, dances effortlessly over the piano, creating a warm atmosphere that feels both nostalgic and fresh. The production, handled by Krall herself alongside her longtime collaborator, the legendary Tommy LiPuma, is polished yet retains a sense of intimacy. The arrangements are lush but not overwhelming, allowing Krall’s voice to take center stage. This balance is crucial, as it highlights her ability to convey deep emotion through subtlety rather than grandiosity.

One of the standout tracks is her interpretation of "I Told Every Little Star," where Krall’s phrasing and timing breathe new life into the classic. The song’s gentle swing is complemented by the soft brushwork of drummer Karriem Riggins and the understated bass lines of Christian McBride, creating a dreamy soundscape that envelops the listener. It’s a perfect example of how Krall can take a well-known standard and make it feel personal and new.

The album also features a delightful cover of "Night and Day," which showcases Krall’s ability to infuse her own style into the fabric of jazz history. The arrangement is both sophisticated and accessible, with a playful interplay between the piano and the accompanying musicians. This track, like many others on the album, highlights the chemistry between Krall and her band, which includes the talented guitarist Anthony Wilson and the ever-reliable drummer, who together create a cohesive sound that feels both tight and organic.

"Turn Up the Quiet" is not just a collection of songs; it’s a journey through the emotional landscape of love, longing, and reflection. Krall’s choice of material reflects her deep understanding of the jazz tradition while also showcasing her growth as an artist. The album includes a mix of well-known standards and lesser-known tracks, which keeps the listening experience engaging. For instance, her take on "Sway" is both playful and sophisticated, demonstrating her ability to swing with the best of them while still maintaining her unique vocal style.

Critics have praised the album for its elegance and the way it captures the essence of jazz. Publications like The New York Times and Rolling Stone have lauded Krall’s ability to convey emotion through her music, noting that she has a rare gift for making even the most familiar songs feel fresh and relevant. The album has also been nominated for several awards, further solidifying Krall’s status as one of the leading voices in contemporary jazz.

In interviews, Krall has expressed her desire to create music that resonates with listeners on a personal level. She often speaks about the importance of live performance in shaping her sound, and this album feels like a reflection of that ethos. The warmth and intimacy of the recording make it feel as though you’re sitting in a cozy jazz club, sipping a cocktail while Krall performs just for you.

Overall, "Turn Up the Quiet" is a testament to Diana Krall’s artistry and her enduring love for jazz. It’s an album that invites you to slow down, listen closely, and appreciate the beauty of each note. Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to her music, this album is a must-listen, offering a perfect blend of classic jazz standards and Krall’s unique interpretative style. It’s a beautiful reminder of why she remains one of the most beloved figures in the genre.
