Description

A clipped snare from Ed Blackwell in Awake Nu cues Cherry’s cornet to feint sideways, then the whole band tumbles in. Don Cherry’s Where Is Brooklyn? is the rawest of his Blue Note dates, cut at Van Gelder in ’66 with Pharoah Sanders, Henry Grimes and Blackwell, produced by Alfred Lion. It feels like street-corner ceremony and laboratory at once, restless but focused.

The Thing has Sanders’ tenor worrying a two-note cell while Cherry threads bright, prickly phrases; Grimes keeps it springy rather than heavy. On There Is The Bomb, the heads snap into place with a sly grin before the rhythm opens into rolling chant. Cherry is searching, sure, but he’s not lost.

This LP pressing gives the music more space and the low end sits deeper, so Grimes’ subtle pivots come through clearly. If you’d rather order online, you can buy Don Cherry records online with us. File it near Ornette Coleman’s Atlantic run and the late-60s Blue Note fire-music corner.

People who think free jazz means chaos tend to find this one persuasive, because the tunes are right there, just stretched and re-shaped. Still sparks a room, whether that’s a quiet night or a small gathering.

We make it easy to buy Don Cherry records online or pick up a copy in our Melbourne record shop.
