Description
Cut at Van Gelder’s Englewood Cliffs studio in 1962 with Bob Thiele producing, Duke Ellington Meets Coleman Hawkins is the kind of summit where nobody grandstands. Ellington brings a lean unit and writes with Hawkins in mind. Self-Portrait (Of The Bean) is the giveaway, a satin slow-burn where Sam Woodyard’s brushes barely stir as Hawkins phrases like he’s carving smoke. The room breathes when the reeds answer his lines.
This pressing opens the space around the horns and lets the low end sit deeper, so Aaron Bell’s bass and the piano’s left hand feel planted without mud. File it next to Ellington & Coltrane for that late Impulse intimacy, though Hawkins brings a more autumnal gravitas. If you’d rather order online, you can buy Duke Ellington records online with us. Perfect for a late Melbourne evening when conversation needs music that listens back.
Originals can be scarce and a bit noisy from club play, so this edition is a tidy way to actually live with the album. You hear Ellington the accompanist as much as the boss, and you hear Hawkins relax into every corner of the band.
Available to order online or in our Melbourne record store, your crate needs this one.
