Description
On Chelsea Bridge, the way Webster leans into the first phrase while Mulligan slips a dry counterline underneath tells you everything about this meeting. Gerry Mulligan Meets Ben Webster pairs baritone and tenor in late-1959 Los Angeles under Norman Granz, with a rhythm team that keeps the ground warm and roomy. They don’t grandstand; they converse, trading lead and shadow with easy authority. Medium tempos glide, ballads sigh without sagging, and the sly humor in Mulligan’s phrasing teases out Webster’s plush vibrato.
This LP pressing gives the horns air to breathe; the space between voices is clearer and the low end sits deeper. For fans of Stan Getz’s late-50s Verve dates, but here the blend is darker and more conversational. If you’d rather order online, you can buy Gerry Mulligan records online with us. File this next to your cool-era small-group records and those cosy Sunday-afternoon spins in Melbourne.
Highlights beyond Chelsea Bridge include the unhurried mid-tempo dialogue where each solo slips back to creamy counter-melody like two old friends finishing each other’s sentences. It’s a record that rewards volume and attention without ever shouting.
