Description

Hank Mobley's 1965 album "A Caddy for Daddy" is a quintessential example of the hard bop style that defined much of Blue Note Records' output during the 1960s. Released in early 1966, the album features Mobley on tenor saxophone, supported by an impressive lineup of musicians: Lee Morgan on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, McCoy Tyner on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. This stellar ensemble brings a vibrant energy to the session, making it a standout in Mobley's extensive discography.

The title track, "A Caddy for Daddy", is a bluesy, groove-driven piece that sets the tone for the album. Mobley's composition skills shine here, as the tune balances a catchy, soulful melody with ample space for improvisation. Each musician takes a turn to solo, showcasing their individual styles while maintaining a cohesive group dynamic. Lee Morgan's trumpet work is particularly striking, blending fiery intensity with lyrical phrasing.

"The Morning After" shifts the mood slightly, offering a more introspective and lyrical approach. McCoy Tyner's piano playing is a highlight on this track, his harmonic sensibilities adding depth and texture to the piece. The interplay between Mobley and Tyner is especially engaging, as they weave their lines together seamlessly.

"Venus Di Mildew" is another standout track, featuring a playful, almost whimsical melody that contrasts with the more serious tone of some of the other pieces. Curtis Fuller's trombone adds a rich, warm timbre to the ensemble, and his solo here is a masterclass in phrasing and expression.

The album closes with "Ace Deuce Trey" and "3rd Time Around", both of which maintain the high standard set by the earlier tracks. "Ace Deuce Trey" is a lively, swinging number that highlights Billy Higgins' impeccable drumming, while "3rd Time Around" offers a more relaxed, contemplative conclusion to the album.

"A Caddy for Daddy" is a testament to Hank Mobley's talent as both a saxophonist and a composer. While he may not have achieved the same level of fame as some of his contemporaries, Mobley's contributions to jazz are undeniable. This album, in particular, captures him at the height of his powers, supported by a group of musicians who were equally at the top of their game. It's a must-listen for fans of hard bop and a great entry point for those looking to explore Mobley's work.
