Released on November 9, 2018, this album is a testament to Goldblum's lifelong passion for music, particularly jazz, which he has often described as a vital part of his identity. The album features a collection of classic jazz standards, reimagined with a playful and fresh approach that highlights both Goldblum's charismatic piano playing and his charming vocal style.
From the opening track, a lively rendition of "The Coffee Song," it’s clear that this album is all about fun and spontaneity. Goldblum’s playful banter and infectious enthusiasm set the tone, inviting listeners into a world where jazz is not just music but a celebration of life. The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra, a group of talented musicians who have been playing together for years, provides a rich backdrop that complements Goldblum’s whimsical style. Their tight arrangements and improvisational flair shine throughout the album, making each track feel like a unique experience.
One of the standout tracks is "Ain't Misbehavin'," where Goldblum’s smooth vocals glide effortlessly over the swinging rhythm. The arrangement is both classic and contemporary, showcasing the band’s ability to breathe new life into well-known standards. The interplay between Goldblum’s piano and the brass section is particularly noteworthy, creating a dynamic that feels both intimate and expansive. It’s a perfect example of how the album balances nostalgia with a modern twist, appealing to both jazz aficionados and casual listeners alike.
The album also features a number of guest artists, including the likes of Sharon Van Etten and Anna Kendrick, who bring their own unique flair to the proceedings. Kendrick’s appearance on "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free" is a highlight, as her soulful voice harmonizes beautifully with Goldblum’s playful piano lines. This collaboration not only showcases the versatility of the album but also highlights Goldblum’s ability to bring together diverse musical talents, creating a rich tapestry of sound.
Critics have responded positively to "Plays Well With Others," praising its joyful spirit and the seamless blend of various musical influences. Publications like Rolling Stone and NPR have noted Goldblum’s genuine love for jazz, which shines through in every note. The album has been described as a delightful romp through the jazz canon, with a sense of spontaneity that makes it feel alive. It’s clear that Goldblum is not just a celebrity dabbling in music; he is a passionate musician who respects the genre and its history.
Production-wise, the album was recorded at EastWest Studios in Los Angeles, a legendary space that has hosted countless iconic artists. The studio’s rich history adds an extra layer of depth to the album, as it captures the essence of live jazz performance. The production is crisp and vibrant, allowing each instrument to shine while maintaining a cohesive sound that feels both polished and organic.
Goldblum’s commentary on the album reveals his deep connection to jazz and its improvisational nature. In interviews, he has expressed how jazz is about collaboration and communication, which is evident in the way the musicians interact throughout the album. This sense of camaraderie is palpable, making the listener feel as if they are part of an intimate gathering rather than just an audience.
In a world where music can often feel overly produced and formulaic, "Plays Well With Others" stands out as a refreshing reminder of the joy of live performance and the magic of jazz. Jeff Goldblum & The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra have crafted an album that is not only entertaining but also a heartfelt tribute to the genre they love. Whether you’re a lifelong jazz enthusiast or a newcomer to the scene, this album is sure to bring a smile to your face and a swing to your step.
