Released on November 3, 2023, this album is a vibrant collection that captures the essence of live jazz while also highlighting Goldblum’s playful personality and deep appreciation for the genre.
From the moment the needle hits the vinyl, listeners are greeted with a warm, inviting sound that feels both nostalgic and fresh. The album opens with the lively track "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free," a classic that Goldblum and his band interpret with a joyful swing. The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra, comprised of talented musicians who have been with Goldblum for years, brings a rich texture to the music, blending traditional jazz elements with a contemporary flair. The interplay between the piano, brass, and rhythm section is nothing short of mesmerizing, creating an atmosphere that feels like a cozy jazz club on a Saturday night.
One of the standout tracks is "Ain’t Misbehavin’," where Goldblum’s playful vocals shine. His ability to convey emotion through his singing is impressive, and he manages to balance humor and sincerity effortlessly. The arrangement is tight, with a fantastic piano solo that showcases Goldblum’s skills as a musician. It’s clear that he is not just an actor dabbling in music; he is a passionate artist who has honed his craft over the years.
The album also features a few original compositions, which is a testament to Goldblum’s growth as a musician. "The Blooming Song" is a particularly enchanting piece that captures the essence of the album’s title. It’s a love letter to the beauty of life and music, with lush harmonies and a captivating melody that lingers long after the song ends. The lyrics reflect Goldblum’s whimsical yet profound outlook on life, making it a personal favorite among fans.
Critics have been largely positive about "Still Blooming," with many noting Goldblum’s unique ability to connect with his audience. Publications like JazzTimes and DownBeat have praised the album for its authenticity and the infectious joy that radiates from each track. The album has also been nominated for several awards, including a nod for Best Jazz Vocal Album at the upcoming Grammy Awards, which speaks volumes about its quality and reception in the jazz community.
Goldblum’s charisma is palpable throughout the album, and his banter between songs adds a layer of intimacy that is often missing in studio recordings. It feels as if he is inviting you into his world, sharing stories and laughter, which is a refreshing approach in today’s music scene. His love for jazz is evident, and it’s clear that he respects the genre’s rich history while also wanting to contribute to its future.
The production of "Still Blooming" is noteworthy as well. Recorded live at the iconic Blue Lagoon venue, the album captures the energy of a live performance, complete with the sounds of the audience’s laughter and applause. This choice of recording location adds an authentic touch, making listeners feel as if they are part of the experience. The sound quality is impeccable, allowing each instrument to shine through, from the smooth saxophone lines to the rhythmic pulse of the drums.
In a world where music can often feel overly polished and manufactured, "Still Blooming" stands out as a genuine expression of joy and artistry. Jeff Goldblum & The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra have crafted an album that not only showcases their musical talents but also celebrates the beauty of life through jazz. Whether you’re a longtime fan of Goldblum or a newcomer to his music, this album is sure to leave you smiling and perhaps even dancing in your living room.
