Description
The little bass‑pedal walk in Organ Grinder Swing tells you everything about Jimmy Smith’s feel, and how Kenny Burrell and Grady Tate tuck in around it. This mid‑60s Verve trio date strips things back to organ, guitar, and drums, letting groove carry the whole side. On the title cut, Burrell’s chord stabs leave air for Smith’s swells, while Tate’s ride cymbal murmurs rather than shouts; a later chorus finds Smith nudging the tempo with a sly pedal push that makes the room lean forward.
This pressing gives the music room to breathe: the low end sits deeper and the imaging between organ, guitar, and kit is cleaner, so you can follow Tate’s ghost notes without strain. Prefer to stay in? You can buy Jimmy Smith records online here.
File it next to Brother Jack McDuff, but note the difference—Smith’s left hand is greasier and Burrell keeps the guitar plush, not prickly. It’s an easy record to live with, whether you’re hosting a small dinner or tidying up on a Saturday, and it still rewards close listening when the solos start trading phrases.
