Description
The conga pickup into Minor’s Holiday snaps you to attention before Dorham answers with a tight, slightly tart line. Kenny Dorham – Afro-Cuban is the place where his lyric trumpet meets a hard, dancing rhythm section, and it still feels crisp and focused. Lotus Flower floats a melancholic theme that the ensemble patiently shades, while La Villa locks into a tumbao that lets the horns bite without getting heavy.
This LP pressing does what you want for this music: space opens up around the horns and low end sits deeper, so the percussion breathes instead of crowding the front line. You can really follow the conversation between trumpet, reeds and the hand drums.
File it next to Dizzy Gillespie’s Afro-Cuban experiments and the early Blue Note hard bop era; it’s a bridge record that plays beautifully start to finish rather than just a “Latin feature.” If you’d rather order online, you can buy Kenny Dorham records online with us.
Played softly during a late cook-up or turned up for a small room, it holds the room without shouting. The tunes are concise, the solos purposeful, and the groove quietly insistent. It’s a smart pick for anyone building out that corner of the shelf where bop meets clave.
