Description
Elvin Jones’s little tom wobble into the first chorus of Zoltan tells you this isn’t typical soul-jazz. Larry Young’s Unity finds the Hammond pushed into modal territory with Woody Shaw and Joe Henderson locked in. Monk’s Dream becomes an angular conversation rather than a lounge turn, Young’s chords hovering while Henderson threads crisp lines. On If, it’s all buoyant tension, Shaw’s theme bright over Jones’s rolling pulse. This LP pressing opens more space around the organ and horn interplay, and the low end sits deeper without mud. It belongs beside Jimmy Smith in your rack, but the harmonic palette here is leaner and more exploratory. Recorded at Van Gelder’s, the band breathes as one ensemble rather than a showcase, which is why the record feels so cohesive decades on. If you’d rather order online, you can buy Larry Young records online with us. File this under mid-60s Blue Note that rewards repeat plays, whether you’re dialling in a late drive or hosting a small, curious crowd. Our pick for the goosebump moment is the swell under Shaw’s last chorus on Zoltan before Jones snaps the lid shut. You’ll keep catching fresh voicings in Young’s left hand from spin to spin.
