Description
Cut at Van Gelder in ’68 with Bennie Maupin on tenor, ¡Caramba! finds Lee Morgan easing his hard-bop bite into a sunlit, Latin-leaning groove. The title tune swings on Billy Higgins’s rimshot and a sly bass push from Reggie Workman; you can almost feel Morgan smile between phrases. Cedar Walton brings a graceful touch to A Baby’s Smile.
This LP pressing opens the space between horns and lets the low end sit deeper, so Maupin’s grain and Higgins’s cymbal wash separate cleanly without losing heat. It’s a late-Blue Note snapshot that belongs right beside Horace Silver’s era, catching that shift from crisp bop to roomier, funk-friendly forms.
If you can’t make it in, you can buy Lee Morgan records online with us.
I keep coming back to the little turnaround on Cunning Lee, where Walton’s left hand nudges the band forward and Morgan answers with a bright, slightly cracked attack. Art and notes are classic Blue Note.
File this for a Saturday tidy or a low-lit catch-up with friends: approachable, rich, and quietly confident.
Available online now or in our Melbourne shop, an easy pick for any Lee Morgan fan.
