Description
Lonnie Smith's album Think! is a quintessential example of the soul-jazz genre, showcasing the organist's remarkable talent and his ability to craft grooves that are both infectious and sophisticated. Released in 1968 on the iconic Blue Note label, this record captures the vibrant energy of the late 1960s jazz scene while also incorporating elements of funk and R&B, making it a standout in Smith's discography.
The album features a stellar lineup of musicians, including Lee Morgan on trumpet, David "Fathead" Newman on tenor saxophone, Melvin Sparks on guitar, and Marion Booker on drums. This ensemble brings a dynamic interplay to the tracks, with each musician contributing their unique voice to the overall sound. The chemistry among the players is palpable, and their performances are both tight and expressive.
The title track, a cover of Aretha Franklin's "Think", is a highlight of the album. Smith's Hammond B-3 organ takes centre stage, delivering a performance that is both soulful and electrifying. The groove is irresistible, and the interplay between the organ and the horns creates a rich, layered texture. This track exemplifies Smith's ability to take a well-known song and make it entirely his own, infusing it with his signature style and energy.
Another standout track is "Son of Ice Bag", an original composition by Smith. This piece showcases his compositional skills and his knack for creating compelling grooves. The track features a driving rhythm and a memorable melody, with each musician contributing to the overall vibe. The solos are engaging and showcase the technical prowess of the players, while the rhythm section provides a solid foundation that keeps the track moving forward.
Throughout the album, Smith's organ playing is nothing short of masterful. His use of the instrument's tonal range and his ability to create dynamic shifts in intensity are impressive. He has a way of drawing the listener in, whether through a soulful ballad or an uptempo groove. His playing is both technically proficient and deeply emotive, making it clear why he is considered one of the greats of the Hammond B-3.
The production on Think! is also worth noting. The album was produced by Francis Wolff, a co-founder of Blue Note Records, and the sound quality is excellent. The recording captures the warmth and richness of the instruments, and the mix allows each player to shine. The production enhances the listening experience, making it easy to appreciate the nuances of the performances.
Think! received critical acclaim upon its release and has since become a classic in the soul-jazz genre. It is a testament to Lonnie Smith's talent and his ability to create music that is both accessible and artistically satisfying. The album remains a favourite among jazz enthusiasts and continues to inspire musicians and listeners alike.
In conclusion, Lonnie Smith's Think! is a must-listen for fans of jazz, funk, and soul. It is a vibrant and engaging album that showcases the best of what the genre has to offer. Whether you're a longtime fan of Smith's work or new to his music, this album is sure to leave a lasting impression.
