Description

Cut at Van Gelder in 1961 with Eric Dolphy and Booker Ervin flanking him, Mal Waldron’s The Quest is a taut, moody set that rewards close listening. Warm Canto glows with the woody sigh of Ron Carter’s cello, Dolphy’s clarinet tracing spare lines while Waldron lets silence do the heavy lifting. Status Seeking flips the script, a knotty theme that Ervin bites into before Dolphy answers with bristling alto. On Warp and Woof, the frontline weaves in and out of meter, and you can feel Persip’s ride tugging everyone forward.

This LP pressing gives the band room to breathe, imaging is tidier and the low end sits deeper. File it beside early 60s Mingus, similar bite but with Waldron’s cool resolve. Around Preston turntables, it’s a late-night keeper.

If you’d rather order online, you can buy Mal Waldron records online with us. What keeps me coming back is the balance of grit and restraint, the way unusual instrumentation never turns fussy. Dolphy sounds exploratory, Ervin sounds earthy, and Waldron keeps the compass steady.

Classic New Jazz energy, beautifully presented, and a smart anchor for a hard-bop-to-out post-bop shelf. Perfect for anyone building a record collection, buy online or in store today.
