Description
Tracked at Radio Recorders in 1959 under Nesuhi Ertegun, The Shape of Jazz to Come finds Ornette Coleman’s quartet carving a new grammar without losing the blues. Lonely Woman floats on Billy Higgins’ whispering cymbal and Charlie Haden’s anchored pedal, while Don Cherry darts in and out with pocket‑trumpet phrases that feel spoken. Congeniality swings crooked, all grin and side‑step, and the themes lodge themselves without overweighting the head. This LP pressing opens up more space around the group, and the low end sits deeper so Haden sounds present in the room; cymbals decay cleanly. In Melbourne, it’s the album we hand to anyone curious about where post‑bop cracked open. File it beside Eric Dolphy or the late‑50s Atlantic shift, as much for its melody as its freedom. If you’d rather order online, you can buy Ornette Coleman records online with us. The iconic sleeve still looks sharp, but it’s the conversational feel—four voices truly listening—that keeps you returning. You’ll hear new lines in Focus on Sanity each pass, a sign of music built to breathe. Essential, but never a museum piece. Shop online or dig for it in our Preston store while stock lasts.
