Description
Oscar Peterson's album "Action" is a remarkable showcase of the pianist's virtuosity and the dynamic interplay of his trio. Released in 1964, this album is part of the "Exclusively for My Friends" series, which was recorded at the private studio of Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer in Villingen, Germany. The series is highly regarded for its intimate setting and superb sound quality, capturing Peterson at the height of his powers.
"Action" features the classic Oscar Peterson Trio lineup with Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums. This trio is often celebrated for its tight cohesion and the seamless way in which the musicians interact with each other. The album opens with "At Long Last Love," a Cole Porter tune that Peterson transforms into a lively and swinging number. His technical prowess is on full display, with rapid runs and intricate improvisations that are both dazzling and tasteful.
One of the standout tracks on the album is "Easy Walker," a bluesy number that highlights Peterson's ability to convey deep emotion through his playing. The track is a testament to the trio's ability to groove effortlessly, with Brown's bass providing a solid foundation and Thigpen's drumming adding subtle yet effective accents. Another highlight is "Tin Tin Deo," a Latin-infused piece that showcases the trio's versatility and Peterson's rhythmic sensibility.
The album also includes a beautiful rendition of "I've Got a Crush on You," where Peterson's lyrical playing shines. His interpretation of the Gershwin classic is both tender and sophisticated, demonstrating his ability to balance technical skill with emotional depth. Throughout the album, Peterson's command of the piano is evident, as he navigates complex harmonies and intricate melodies with ease.
Critically, "Action" has been praised for its exceptional musicianship and the chemistry between the trio members. The album is often cited as one of the highlights of Peterson's extensive discography, showcasing his ability to blend technical brilliance with expressive playing. While "Action" itself did not win any specific awards, Oscar Peterson's contributions to jazz have been widely recognized throughout his career. He received numerous accolades, including several Grammy Awards, and was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. His influence on jazz piano is profound, inspiring countless musicians with his innovative approach and unparalleled technique.
In terms of cultural significance, "Action" and the "Exclusively for My Friends" series represent a period in jazz history where the genre was evolving and expanding its reach. Peterson's work during this time helped to bridge the gap between traditional jazz and more modern interpretations, making his music accessible to a broader audience.
