Description
The dry finger snaps and upright bass glide in Fever tell you everything about Peggy Lee’s command of space and temperature. Ultimate Peggy Lee (2LP) gathers her essentials across Capitol and Decca, sequenced so that the cool veneer and sly swing make sense as one story. Is That All There Is? arrives with its wry spoken poise intact, the orchestra hanging back so her bemused shrug hits harder. Then Why Don’t You Do Right? pulls you into her bluesy early stride, all insinuation and economy.
Prefer a click to a crate dig? You can buy Peggy Lee records online here.
Spread across two records, the arrangements breathe; low end sits deeper and imaging is tidier, so brushes, snaps, and vibraphone pop in clear relief. Vocals sit forward without glare, the intimate phrasing preserved rather than glossed.
File it beside Julie London and the late-50s cool torch era, but note the difference: Lee’s swing is slyer, her storytelling more conversational, and the repertoire roams from noir lounge to chart-pop with sly subversion. As an introduction or a long-overdue upgrade, this set lands as a concise, genuinely playable overview that flatters both the late-night standards and the radio hits without smoothing away their bite.
Add it to your collection today, available online or in our Melbourne record store.
