Released on March 31, 2023, this album marks a significant moment in her career, showcasing her ability to reinterpret and breathe new life into classic songs while also reflecting her personal journey.
"Pieces of Treasure" is a collection of jazz standards and beloved songs that have shaped Jones's musical landscape. The album features a mix of well-known tracks and deeper cuts, all delivered with her signature style that blends jazz, pop, and a touch of folk. What stands out immediately is the warmth and intimacy of the production. Recorded in the legendary Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, the album captures the essence of live performance, with Jones's voice front and center, accompanied by a stellar band that includes the likes of guitarist David Piltch and pianist Chris Bruce. The arrangements are lush yet understated, allowing her vocals to shine through.
One of the standout tracks is her rendition of "I’ll Be Seeing You," a song that resonates deeply with themes of nostalgia and longing. Jones's interpretation is both haunting and tender, showcasing her ability to convey emotion with every note. Another highlight is her take on "The Last Time I Saw Richard," a song originally by Joni Mitchell. Here, Jones infuses the track with a sense of reflection and maturity, transforming it into a poignant meditation on love and loss.
Critics have praised "Pieces of Treasure" for its authenticity and emotional depth. The album has been described as a return to form for Jones, who has always been known for her storytelling prowess. Publications like Rolling Stone and NPR have lauded her ability to connect with listeners on a personal level, and this album is no exception. The critical reception has been overwhelmingly positive, with many noting that Jones's voice has only grown richer and more expressive with age.
In interviews, Jones has shared that this album is a celebration of the songs that have influenced her throughout her life. She has a knack for selecting material that resonates with her own experiences, and this album feels like a heartfelt tribute to the music that has shaped her identity as an artist. The title, "Pieces of Treasure," reflects not only the songs she has chosen but also the personal treasures she has collected along her journey in the music industry.
The production of the album is noteworthy as well. It was produced by Jones herself, alongside her longtime collaborator, the acclaimed musician and producer, David Piltch. Their chemistry is evident in the seamless blend of instrumentation and vocals, creating a sound that feels both timeless and contemporary. The use of analog recording techniques adds a layer of warmth that is often missing in modern productions, making the listening experience feel like a cozy evening spent with an old friend.
