Description
Cut for Prestige’s New Jazz imprint in the early 60s, Ron Carter takes the cello chair on Ron Carter With Eric Dolphy, Mal Waldron - Where?, a sly pivot that reshapes the whole group dynamic. Dolphy slips in and out of the ensemble with those tart lines while Mal Waldron keeps the floor cool and steady; George Duvivier and Charlie Persip lock it all together. The title track Where? is the doorway, with Carter bowing long, vocal phrases over Waldron’s spare comping. A spare duo episode in Bass Duet lets you hear how Carter and Duvivier converse without crowding each other.
This pressing rewards a quiet room: space between players opens up and the low end sits deeper, so Carter’s arco has body without bloat. Around Melbourne, we reach for it on late weeknights when conversation and music share the room equally. If you’d rather order online, you can buy Ron Carter records online with us.
File it next to the chamber-bop feel of Dolphy’s Out There era, where structure and freedom walk side by side. Small details keep pulling you back in, like Persip’s dry cymbal chatter under a hushed piano figure, or the way Dolphy’s reed tone leans into Carter’s sustain mid-chorus.
Perfect for anyone building a record collection, buy online or in store today.
