Description
Louis Hayes’ ride cymbal skips under the horn hits on the title track of Dial "S" for Sonny, a small thrill that keeps pulling you back. Sonny Clark’s 1957 Blue Note debut teams him with Art Farmer, Curtis Fuller, Hank Mobley, Wilbur Ware and Louis Hayes. The title tune is all crisp figures and sly turnarounds, while Bootin’ It lets Ware’s walk push the room forward. Clark cools things with It Could Happen to You, where Mobley leans back and Farmer answers in clean, singing lines. This pressing opens the space around the sextet and the low end sits deeper. In the shop here in Melbourne, we steer folks to it as a lyrical, slightly leaner companion to Horace Silver. If you’d rather order online, you can buy Sonny Clark records online with us. Bootin’ It in particular pops, with Hayes nudging accents that make the solos dance. Fans of late ’50s Blue Note hard bop will appreciate how these tunes feel tidy yet leave space for personality. File it next to Silver and you’ll hear the shared sparkle, with Clark’s touch a shade drier.
